Indian TV shows have exalted forced marriages, just the channel Star Plus one of the popular show Imlie
being one of the latest example.
Star Plus one of the popular shows Imlie, which is rated as one of the Top five most-watched on the small screen. However, the daily shows does not give you anything much. It is just good old wine in a different bottle, which our Indian watchers have been following over the years. A town boy visits a village and unless the conditions or the villagers seize him to marry an innocent village girl, who is certainly quite young. In addition, to supplement more seasoning to the drama, the person has a woman love waiting for him in the city.
VILLAGERS FORCE the main lead character ADITYA TO Wed the lead IMLIE On Imlie, Aditya (played by Gashmeer Mahajani), a well-known journalist from the city of Delhi visits Pagdandiya village where he is seen befriending an 18-year-old girl Imlie (played by Sumbul Touqeer Khan). He is forced to wed her despite having a lover waiting in Delhi after when the villagers doubt that he is having an unlawful affair with IMLIE. And now, as he is married to both the women and as foreseen, is in true love with the main lead of the show.
Creators of the shows ARE OBSESSED WITH Compelled MARRIAGES
Creators seem to be highly obsessed with this story, as, in the latest decade, we have seen many similar shows on related lines. For instance, we have Gustakh Dil, on Life OK, which starred Sana Amin Seikh with Vibhav Roy. Mohi that starred Vinita Joshi alongside Karan Sharma then follows this. Now, we have Imlie.
Interestingly, all those shows are none other than the remakes of hit Bengali shows. Gustakh Dil was known to be the remake of Star Jalsha's show Bou Kotha Kao. However, what is remarkable is both the shows Mohi and Imlie are also remakes of the very same superhit Bengali show, Ishti Kutum. It was quite successful and used to run on Star Jalsha beginning from 2011 until 2015.
Indian TV shows have seen romanticized forced matches and then marriages. The creators are clearly highly obsessed with applying the traumatic event into a dreamy fairy tale, which can happen in some circumstances, but such events scar the sufferer for life. There is zero romanticism when you forcefully marry out of panic. Makers should end glorifying coerced marriages. Many favourite shows such as Ishqbaaz, Madhubala, Iss Pyaar KO Kya Naam Doon, and Pratigya highlighted forced unions between the main leads.
Well, Imlie's success among the viewers shows us that, yet we are only one to be condemned for getting repeated content. The variety of shows and narratives that are accepted by TV buffs symbolises that the writers are tired of reproducing for shows that have to go on for years and can't retain anything unusual or out of the case. However, more often when the viewers get to see the quality content on TV, they do not provide the amount of appreciation that they give to shows such as the Naagin series or even ZEE TV's Kumkum Bhagya. As conclusion, they had to go off air maybe in less than two to three months.
